THIS WEEK'S STORIES
U.S. TikTok is here, but not without controversy
While the new agreement opens doors, it’s also stirred up backlash. Many users online have expressed concerns over weakened data protection now that the platform operates under different privacy rules.
On top of that, the app has experienced a few hiccups lately: slower loading times and issues when uploading videos have led some users to explore alternatives like Skylight or UpScrolled.
Reels dominate Instagram ads
Instagram ads have a clear winner: Reels. The format that’s already an organic hit on the platform continues to prove its power. In 2025, more than half of all Instagram ads were published as Reels, a big leap from 2024, when they made up just 35%.
Meta eyes premium subscriptions
Meta is reportedly working on a new paid subscription model that would offer access to exclusive features, such as custom audience lists and advanced AI tools for creators. We’ll have to wait to see the full feature list, pricing, and rollout details; for now, it looks like this offering will be separate from Meta Verified.
France follows Australian steps
France may become the next country to ban social media for children under 15. Lawmakers have already voted in favor of the proposal, which would also prevent students from bringing mobile phones to school.

BEYOND THE SCROLL
Don’t miss this trend train
There’s something about a new year that makes us feel recharged, like we get a clean slate to finally learn Italian, quit caffeine, or get our finances in check.
And exactly about finances is what No Spend January is all about.
A global movement that encourages people to spend less (or not at all) throughout January. And, as you can imagine, it’s fueling a wave of social content: daily vlogs, personal challenges, money-saving tips, weekly recaps, and financial advice.
It’s a trend that’s growing fast. In fact, this year it has literally exploded. Okay, maybe not literally, but look at this Google Trends chart:

But what if your brand has nothing to do with finance?
#1. Staying in tune with global trends is essential for social media professionals. You can’t connect with people online while ignoring what’s actually happening on the platforms.
#2. Not every trend will fit your brand perfectly, and that’s okay. The key is finding creative, relevant ways to add your voice:
🍽️ A food account could share recipes using leftovers or budget-friendly seasonal ingredients.
👗 A fashion brand could post outfit ideas using pieces people already own.
🧸 A parenting account could round up free activities for kids or fun, low-cost ways to spend time at home.
Brands like Monzo and Too Good To Go have already joined the movement, inviting their communities to share their new spending habits and personal challenges.
Social media is full of opportunities. The key is to keep your eyes open and adapt with creativity and purpose.
